S. Korea: Kim Jong-un is still breathing

Special Advisor to President of South Korea (S. Korea), Moon Chung-in, stated that the Supreme Leader of North Korea (N. Korea), Kim Jong-un, is alive and well at the moment. The statement came after a rumor about his death spread on the mass media. Since last week, Kim Jong-un was reported dead.

Speaking on Sunday, Moon Chung-in restated that the position of S. Korean government remains firm. He said that Kim is currently staying in Wonsan, a resort city in the eastern part of N. Korea since 13 April. Chung-in stated that so far, there is nothing of strange occurrences appeared.

Speculation about Kim Jong-un’s wellbeing emerged after being absent on the anniversary of his deceased grandfather and the founder of N. Korea, Kim Il-sung, on 15 April ago. The Supreme Leader was also nowhere to be seen in public after chairing the N. Korea’s Worker Party’s meeting on 11 April. A day after, N. Korea’s state media reported that Kim is inspecting the fighter jets.

However, being absent from Kim Il-sung’s anniversary made the media speculate on what made Kim Jong-un failed to attend such a grand event. At that time, S. Korea shook its head about Kim Jong-un’s whereabouts. Last week, Blue House stated that there is no extraordinary activity detected in N. Korea.

Kim Jong-un was known to undergo cardiovascular surgery in early April due to his unhealthy lifestyle. The Daily NK reported that the Supreme Leader had recovered. Quoting the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Kim was said to be in “grave danger”.

On Thursday, however, the President of the United States (U.S), Donald Trump, bashed the rumor. He said that Kim is well, just he forgot when the last time he was in touch with him was.

N. Korean newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, stated that on Monday, Kim had sent a gratitude letter for the workers in the tourist beach project in Kalma, Wonsan. However, there was no latest picture of Kim Jong-un.

A satellite image obtained from 38North showed that a train, supposedly belonging to the Supreme Leader, was seen in Wonsan last week. Six years ago, an issue of Kim Jong-un’s wellbeing emerged after he disappeared for almost 6 weeks. Reportedly, he was undergoing surgery to remove a cyst from his feet.
