Riza Patria appointed as the replacement for Sandiaga Uno

The chairman of the central executive board of the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra), Ahmad Riza Patria, is officially voted as the new Deputy Governor of Jakarta for 2017 – 2022, replacing his predecessor, Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno. Riza beat his competitor, Nurmansyah Lubis, from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS).

Previously, the election for Jakarta’s Deputy Governor was once delayed last year. Both Gerindra and PKS went push-and-pull regarding the candidate to replace Sandiaga Uno. After all, the Chairman of Gerindra, Prabowo Subianto, promised to give the deputy governor seat for PKS if they voted for him in the 2019 Election.

Then, PKS proposed Agung Yulianto and Akhmad Syaikhu as the candidates. However, the talks met a dead-end. After a sluggish discussion, finally, Gerindra and PKS both proposed one candidate. Gerindra proposed Riza while PKS proposed Nurmansyah.

The voting was done in a plenary meeting by the Jakarta City Council (DPRD) on Monday, chaired by the Speaker of the DPRD Jakarta, Prasetyo Edi Marsudi, amid the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic outbreak in Jakarta.

Nine fractions of the DPRD: Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), Gerindra, PKS, National Mandate Party (PAN), Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI), NasDem Party, Functional Groups Party (Golkar), National Awakening Party (PKB), and United Development Party (PPP) have given their votes.

According to the votes, Riza got 81 votes while Nurmansyah got 17. Two votes were annulled. In total, 100 DPRD Jakarta members attended the voting.

Riza replaced Sandiaga who resigned in 2018 to join Prabowo Subianto to compete against Joko Widodo (Jokowi) in the 2019 Presidential Election. Prasetyo then officially appointed Riza as the new Deputy Governor of Jakarta to accompany the current Governor of Jakarta, Anies Baswedan, until 2022.

The result will be delivered to the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo (Jokowi), through the Minister of Home Affairs.
