Retailers Sued For Edison Light Bulbs Patent

Thomas Edison’s invention is unexpectedly the new topic of lawsuit today. That’s what can happen when the reinvention of a product is already made and the patent belongs to the reinventor. On this case, it is University of California the reinventor. A research team from University of California led by Nobel Prize winner Shuji Nakamura filed lawsuit against five big retailers over the filament-style LED light bulbs. Those retailers are Walmart, Target, Amazon, Ikea and Bed Bath & Beyond. They are being accused of selling the vintage-looking light bulbs designed by foreign manufacturers. That makes the foreign manufacturers are guilty of stealing the design. But the retailers are under fire because they don’t bother to verify the authenticity of intellectual property, as the lawsuit stated.

The Ikea spokesperson said the company is looking into the details of the lawsuit. Ikea said that it will be considered premature to offer any comment without enough information on the matter. Meanwhile, an Amazon spokesperson said the company does not give comment on active litigation. As for Walmart, Target and Bed Bath & Beyond, they are being silent. They did not immediately respond to the public. These retailers aren’t the only companies got struck by light bulbs complain. University of California also push the International Trade Commission in Washington to review the possibility of patent violations. It may prevent “filament” LED light bulbs from foreign manufacturers to come to the U.S., but it is still uncertain.

The reinvention of “filament” LED light bulbs were done by Nakamura’s research team and they added more greatness. The design resembles the vintage look of Thomas Edison’s invention. It has visible and glowing filaments. The light bulbs also have fraction of energy just like the traditional light bulbs, but they can last longer and stay cooler. So the light bulbs are more efficient in the matter of energy. The light bulbs become so popular ever since they came out. They attract the market strongly including for the five retailers. So it is not surprising that the University of California wants to protect its patent.
