Report: Huawei Helped N. Korea Build and Maintain Wireless Network

The Chinese telecommunication company Huawei is back under US spotlight after a report published by the Washington Post on July 22 reveals that the company has secret operations to build a wireless network in North Korea. The report is said to be cited from internal documents and people familiar with the arrangement.

According to the sources, Huawei has been working on a number of projects in North Korea for at least the past eight years partnering with Chinese state-owned company, Panda International Information Technology Co Ltd.

Under the US provisions about sanctions on Pyongyang, it is clear that any company that does business with North Korea will also face American sanctions. With such a move, the US government is now reviewing if Huawei has violated export control rules in relation to sanctions on North Korea—since the company uses US technology in its components.

While Senators Chris Van Hollen and Tom Cotton said in a statement that Huawei ties to the secretive regime are serial of violations of US laws.

Besides secretly helping North Korea, Huawei also faces another allegation from the Czech Republic for collecting personal data of customers, officials, and business partners, and handing it over to the Chinese government, South China Morning Post reports.

Two former Huawei managers spoke in anonymity to a radio network, saying they were required to enter the data into computer systems that are only managed by Huawei headquarters in China.

With these two fresh bombshell allegations, the uncertainty of Huawei future footprint in the US and the European Union is further worsened.
