Rep. Tulsi Gabbard Sues Google Over Suspended Ad Account

On Thursday, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii is suing Google over her suspended advertising account. Gabbard and her campaign organization Tulsi Now, Inc. initiated the lawsuit in Los Angeles’ federal court. The lawsuit containing Gabbard’s allegation towards Google for her six hours-suspended campaign’s account on June 28. This was happened after Gabbard’s first Democratic presidential debate. The giant tech company also accused of Gmail Spam algorithms manipulation because the campaign’s email went to spam folders. When it was compared to another Democratic candidates, Gabbard got this disadvantage in “disproportionately high rate”, said in the lawsuit. It is also stated that by giving false reason about the suspension, Google had tried to silenced Gibbard.

Based on what happened, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard accused Google for trying to discriminate her campaign. She wrote in a blog post that it shows how dangerous the domination of giant tech companies to public discourse. Gabbard went further to see it as a threat to free speech, fair elections, and democracy. She also stated that she wants to fight back. On the other hand, Google spokeswoman Riva Sciuto, said that it was the automated system triggered the suspension. Sciuto said that Google is proud to provide ad products and the company has no bias towards any party or political ideology.

The lawsuit based on the allegation about tech company domination adds more nightmare for Google. This week the U.S. Department of Justice announced that it is probing large tech companies. Google is predicted to be on the list. This lawsuit will only make everything worse. However, Google isn’t the only one. Over the years, politicians from Republican and Democratic party already criticized the dominance of social media and Silicon Valley companies.
