Reducing plastic bags, Indonesia’s traditional market operator to sell bamboo packaging for Qurban meats

When plastic wastes still become the trending global issue, many countries are currently promoting environmentally packaging as a substitution of petroleum-based plastic. Indonesia also takes part in fighting against plastic wastes and show its commitment to tackling down the problem.

PD Pasar Jaya, a Jakarta-owned traditional market operator, has started selling an eco-friendly packaging derived from bamboo to public. The purpose of selling bamboo packaging is to replace the use of single-use plastic especially for wrapping Qurban meats during Eid al-Adha on July 11, 2019.

This is a recommendation of Governor of Jakarta Anies Baswedan to swift from plastic packaging to eco-friendly packaging, through a gubernatorial circular No. 4/2019.

Amanda Gita Dinanjar, a spokesperson of PD Pasar Jaya, said the price of bamboo packaging is Rp 2,000 per piece and available in 112 places.

The spokesperson claimed PD Pasar Jaya has distributed the eco-friendly packaging to more than 70 traditional markets and over 30 retailer stores.

Previously, the Finance Minister of Indonesia Sri Mulyani has announced the government’s plans to impose a fee on plastic bags at Rp 200 per sheet. The price of plastic bags is expected to be increased up to Rp 500 due to the tax.

As one of the world’s largest population, Indonesia reportedly is the second contributor to marine plastic debris after China.
