Queen Elizabeth at a grocery store's self-checkout machine

Queen Elizabeth’s Reaction at the Self-Checkout Machine

Can you imagine the queen of England go to a grocery store and do a self-checkout all by herself? Well, she did on last Wednesday, May 22. Queen Elizabeth visited London’s Convent Garden. In the grocery store, she took in a pop-up experience based on Sainsbury’s first grocery. The chain had their 150th anniversary as they were first opened in 1869.

At the self-service checkout counter, the queen asked the same question that everyone has wondered: Can you cheat at the self-service counter? Then she was told by Damien Corcoran, a regional manager for Sainsbury’s stores in the north east of England, that she could try but it would be detected. Corcoran also showed the queen how to use the machine.

Corcoran also explained to the queen that the weighted bagging area makes sure that the correct amount of items are accounted for. With that, the customers could leave quickly, especially when they’re in a hurry. The queen then agreed with his statement—she knows people want to hurry.

The queen has only visited grocery stores for a few times in her life, not to mention they were for business. However, she’d loved to shop locally in Ballater in Scotland during her summer break.

Queen Elizabeth was also shown a replica of the counters and an old delivery bike, which brought her memories back.
