Putin Going to G20 Bali, Indonesia Affirms Staying Neutral as Chairman
Indonesia will not side with anyone as the rotating chairman
of the G20, said Indonesian Ambassador to the United Nations Dian Triansyah
Djani on Thursday (24/3/2022).
Dian's comments followed increasing calls for Russia not to
be invited to the G20 summit in Bali in November 2022.
Previously, the Russian Ambassador to Indonesia on Wednesday
(23/3/2022) confirmed that President Vladimir Putin plans to attend the G20
Indonesia meeting.
Western countries are taking a stand on Russia's membership
in the G20, as the invasion of Ukraine triggered the refugee crisis in Europe
and rocked global markets.
"We will remain as an impartial chairman and will find
a solution to any problems that may arise," Dian said.
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Thursday
(24/3/2022) said allowing Vladimir Putin to sit with other world leaders at the
same table for this year's G20 summit would be a step too far for Indonesia.
Former British prime minister David Cameron also called on
Western countries to boycott the G20 summit if the Russian president were to
come, in an opinion piece published in the Wall Street Journal this week.
However, several other G20 members are likely to veto the
ban, and China insists Russia is a key member of the G20.
Dian emphasized that the invitation for the 2022 G20 summit
date was sent to all member countries - including Russia - on February 22 or
two days before the Russian invasion of Ukraine began.
"Indonesia has always built diplomacy based on the
rules of procedure and past precedents, including hosting the G20," she
added.
Dian further underlined that Indonesia will focus on
economic issues and global recovery, considering "the G20 is the main
international economic forum", implying that the topic of Russian invasion
will most likely be kept off the agenda.
