President of Indonesia, Jokowi Going to Meet Elon Musk in US
Jakarta, CNN Indonesia – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi)
plans to meet Elon Musk on the sidelines of his working visit to the United
States at the ASEAN high-ranking meeting with president Joe Biden this month.
The two will discuss the nickel industry, the raw material
for making electric vehicle batteries. This was revealed by the Minister of
Coordination for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Panjaitan who
also explained that representatives of Tesla, Musk’s electric car company, were
in Indonesia.
“Oh yeah, we’ll meet, we’re setting up where to meet. Right now,
the Tesla team is talking in my office, we had lunch, later on we will have
dinner, tomorrow we are going to the field, and visit Morowali,” said Luhut at
Jakarta Presidential Office on Monday 9 May.
Morowali in Central Sulawesi has an industrial cluster that
processes nickel into electric vehicle battery components. This area represents
half of the domestic refined nickel production.
Jokowi will visit the US on May 12-13 in a high-level ASEAN
summit. The meeting was supposed to take place March 28-29 but was postponed
due to scheduling conflicts and the Russia-Ukraine crisis.
Luhut, through his Instagram account, revealed that he met
Musk last month at the Tesla Giga Factory in Austin, Texas. This is the first
direct meeting between Luhut and Musk after previously the two sides had
discussed investing in Indonesia two years ago.
In the upload, Luhut said Musk considers the nickel industry
in Indonesia to be "very promising to be able to supply raw materials for
electric car batteries, which Tesla really needs, of course, as one of the
leading electric vehicle manufacturers".
Musk, said Luhut, will change his schedule to meet Jokowi on
May 14 in the US. Jokowi is also said to be visiting SpaceX, the space
transportation company that Musk founded.
