Rudiantara: Prepare your IMEI! There will be an application for it

A new regulation by Indonesia’s Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) and Ministry of Trade (Kemendag), signed Friday last week, requires every smartphone user in Indonesia to register their International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI).

However, that does not mean that you cannot use any black market (BM) smartphones. If you happen to purchase a BM smartphone already, no need to regret it. You can register your smartphone’s IMEI no later than February 2020.

Not only to abolish the circulation of illegal phones in Indonesia, the law actually benefits those who doubt the origin of their smartphones. If its IMEI is not registered, the smartphone cannot enjoy after-sales service.

The law, made to abolish the circulation of illegal phones in Indonesia, will be fully enforced by April 2020. If its IMEI is not registered, the phone will not be able to catch any signal. To check your IMEI availability, you can check it out on https://imei.kemenperin.go.id/. From your phone, you can find your IMEI in the “About Phone” setting.

Even better, if you are too unsure about your IMEI, remember to purchase your smartphones at official stores.

The Minister of Informatics and Technology, Rudiantara, unveiled the development of an application to ease the IMEI checking process. Once the application is finished, the users are required to submit their data such as ID Card Serial Number (NIK), and it will be synchronized by the engine provided by Kemenperin.

However, for now, Rudiantara said that the app is not ready yet, adding that there are still six months left for Indonesian people to register their IMEI.
