Pompeo offers condolences for victims in typhoon-hit Japan

WASHINGTON (Kyodo) -- U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday extended his country's "deepest condolences" to Japan in the wake of Typhoon Hagibis, which left dozens dead and caused extensive damages when it struck last weekend.

"We stand by the people of Japan during this difficult time and offer our sincere hopes for Japan's quick recovery from this disaster," Pompeo said in a statement.

More than 70 people died in the typhoon-triggered disaster, with many areas including parts of Tokyo and northeastern Japan flooding as rivers overflowed their banks.
