Playstation turns 25, recognized as world's best-selling game console

On Tuesday, Sony’s PlayStation turned 25. According to the Guinness World Records, the Japanese gaming platform is now the world’s best-selling console, having sold 450.19 million units across the four generations of PlayStation consoles until its 25th anniversary.

The astronomical number was unveiled through PlayStation’s tweet with the photo the CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Jim Ryan, and former CEO, Ken Kutaragi. In his blog, Ryan congratulated PlayStation for its 25 years of achievement and Kutaragi on achieving his visions by making PlayStation an entertainment the world can enjoy.

Looking back, PlayStation released its first console, PSX, in 1994 to compete with the already famous Nintendo’s Super Nintendo console. PSX quickly became the world’s favorite thanks to its then sophisticated 3D graphics and numerous game titles. On its first day of release, around 100,000 PSX was sold in Japan, and it went on until 100 million units were sold globally.

Judging on the individual sales, PS2 (introduced in 2000) and PS4 (introduced in 2013) are the first and the second best-selling PlayStations with 155 million and 102.8 million units sold respectively. Meanwhile, the original PSX trailed behind with 102.5 million units.

PlayStation 3, the first PlayStation console to adapt Blu-Ray format, recorded a rather disappointing figure at 87.4 units.

While PlayStation is teasing its fan-bases by spreading an “official” dev-kit of PS5, the rumor has it that the PS5 will be launched around 2020. But, for the PS4 users, you can still enjoy the upcoming games to hype it up.
