Pixel 4's Update: Eye detection for better security

The latest flagship of Google Pixel series, Pixel 4 and 4XL, will feature tougher security: face unlock. For some tech lovers, Pixel 4 is way too late. Besides, the face unlock system has a fatal flaw. After being tested by several people, the face unlock security works even with your eyes closed. Google also admitted the flaw on its official website.

Similar to the iPhone face unlock system, Pixel 4’s face unlock system scans your depth and map your face accurately so that it cannot be unlocked by photo or masks. Therefore, it is quite safe for app authorization, even for banking permission. Nonetheless, the iPhone requires your open eyes to open, a feature that can be disabled.

Pixel 4 has gotten rid of the fingerprint scanner. Therefore, face unlock will be your only biometric fortress. However, even if you are asleep, someone can just aim it at your face, and it will be opened.

Google promised the users that all of the gadgets that they featured in 2019 Made by Google event in New York will get its gradual upgrade through updates. And, Pixel 4 and 4XL are the most certain to get the update.

In a leak, Google is preparing a “Require eyes to be open” option in the Face Unlock setting. It is not shown in during the New York exhibition, nor will it be installed in the shipping this week. However, in its official statement, Google said that it will deliver the “open eyes” update in the coming months.

To cover up the close eyes weakness, Google suggested the Pixel 4 users layer their phones with PINs, pattern, or password. Even so, Google claimed that the face unlock meets security requirements as a strong biometric.
