Pioneer of Marine and Mitigation Issues, Indonesia Contributed IDR 14 Billion for Climate Change

Jakarta, Indonesia - Indonesia expressed its commitment to be involved in efforts to overcome the threat of climate change by donating funds of USD 1 million or IDR14 billion to The Archipelagic and Island States (AIS) as the pioneer of marine and mitigation issues in AIS forum.

It is reported that the donation will be used to fund various projects regarding climate change and marine protection. Right now, there are about 49 official countries joining the AIS Forum to help saving the world and nature.

According to Maritime Coordinating Minister Luhut Panjaitan, the funds will be handed over through the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) as soon as possible.

He said that they saw many island countries have problems with the increase in the temperature of the earth and the islands can also disappear as in Archipelagic island state there are only 10,000, 20,000 inhabitants.

Indonesia initiated the formation of AIS in 2017. Then, the forum was inaugurated in November 2018 with more countries that joined including Cuba, Comoro Island, Cyprus, Fiji, Guinea Bissau, Indonesia, Jamaica, Madagascar, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Sri Lanka, Seychelles, Singapore, Solomon Islands, Suriname , and Timor Leste.

This former Presidential Chief of Staff also added that Indonesia's contribution was not only through budget support, but also through other activities, such as training to other countries that are currently being held even in other countries.
