Parts of Japan brace for more heavy rain
The Japan Meteorological Agency says Lan is traveling northward over the Sea of Japan at 20 kilometers per hour. The storm is forecast to move further north, and high waves are expected to continue off eastern and western Japan. Tottori City in western Japan recorded more than 500 millimeters of rain from Monday noon through Wednesday morning -- three times the typical amount of rainfall for the entire month of August. Authorities are calling on people to remain alert for mudslides, flooding in low-lying areas, swollen rivers, lightning and tornadoes. Meanwhile, Shinkansen bullet trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo lines on Wednesday are resuming full operation. But the operators say they may have to suspend services again on short notice. They are advising people to stay updated with the latest information.
