Parasite, first Asian film to snatch Oscar award

After winning the prestigious Palme D’Or last year, a South Korean (S. Korea) movie, Parasite by Bong Joon-ho, received the highest award in the movie industry, Oscar Award. Parasite became the first Asian movie and a non-English movie that snatched the Best Picture Award in Oscar 2020, on Sunday night.

For your record, only 11 non-English language films have ever been in the Best Picture nomination.

Bong Joon-ho himself received the Best Director award, while Parasite received Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature. The actors and actresses of Hollywood gave a standing ovation to the director and casts of all Parasite movie.

Parasite tells a black-comedy story of the social gap between two families: Park and Kim. As all Kims gradually work in Parks’ residence, the relations between the two families grew even more complexly and dangerously.

Before snatching Oscar 2020, Parasite also won Screen Actors Guild award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, and British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). For BAFTA, Parasite was nominated for four categories and won two awards: Original Screenplay (Han Jin Won and Bong Joon-ho) and Film Not in the English Language.

Parasite had to face tough competition from “1917”, “Ford Vs. Ferrari”, “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood”, and other English-language movies. Joaquin Phoenix won the Best Actor for his Joker portrayal in “Joker”.

With the win, the Academy decided to appreciate the film, unlike the past 91 ceremonies. The moment may pave a road for Asian-Americans who would like to try out their luck in the industry.
