Over 300 People Rescued on Yakushima Island After Heavy Rain

KAGOSHIMA – A heavy rain fell in Yakushima Island on Saturday, May 18. The heavy caused flood and some places were blocked by landslide. Moreover, trees near the mountain trail are knocked down as well. It made no person can leave the island.

More than 300 people rescued from the island on Sunday after the heavy rain on the day before. People who are a mix of locals and tourists weren’t able to access the island’s main attraction, which is a giant Jomon cedar tree. The roads to the tree were flooded during the heavy rain. The rain itself fell around 120 millimeters per hour.

Hikers in cars and buses were not able to go further into the mountain, so they were forced to spend the night in the vehicles and a mountain cabin. They couldn’t eat anything either, as there was no food at all. Some of them also spend the night outdoors. People from the only can only be rescued on Sunday, due to the weather condition—the heavy rain keeps coming for days.

The number of rescued people was 266, but the number kept going up, and reached number 314. Those who are not predicted are coming to the meeting spot. People are complaining to fell pains and unwell, to the point some of them were taken to the hosptral. Luckily, there is no serious injury.
