Oppo Creates MeshTalk; No Need Internet to Chat

As the time goes on, changes were made. If 15 years ago most of phone users used SMS to chat with other people, these days, people tend to use instant messaging apps to do that. However, an internet connection is needed to chat using an instant messaging app. Whether the internet is from cellular data or WiFi, internet must be on. What if you don’t have to worry about that?

Oppo revealed that they are having a new instant messaging service, called MeshTalk. This instant messaging app is sort of like iMessage for iPhone users, which only works between Oppo users. The big difference is that, MeshTalk won’t need any internet connection—even Bluetooth!

It is reported that MeshTalk is using end-to-end system. Oppo devices will be able to create ad hoc local area network without needing base stations. Therefore, users can talk to each other (via chat, voice call or video call) within 3 kilometers distance. Oppo added MeshTalk won’t drain the battery and it can still work if the battery is under 10%. They said users can use it when one doesn’t have any internet access or when traditional networks are too busy. Concert venue and landing at a foreign airport are some of the examples.

In 2014, Oppo has created a similar feature on their phones. However, back then, the app still needs internet connection to work. That is why the app, FireChat, was not popular.

In addition, Oppo said that they are still developing the app and the release date is still unknown. However, they had introduced the app at the MWC Shanghai 2019, which was held on June 26 – 28.
