Oppo clarifies on slow production

Insinuated for its slow productivity, a Chinese-flagged smartphone brand in Indonesia, Oppo, revealed that it is not in a hurry to release a new flagship smartphone. Flagship is a term often pegged to a smartphone graced with the latest perks and the most expensive ones.

Oppo’s PR Manager, Aryo Meidianto, said that releasing one flagship phone annually is not Oppo’s way which is uncommon for the fast-growing smartphone manufacturers these days. Find X is Oppo’s latest flagship phone in the market, released in July 2018. Last week, Oppo just released its successor, Find X2 and X2 Pro.

Aryo said that Oppo wants its flagship to use the latest tech, not just a small upgrade from its predecessor. Taking an example from Find X, it has 512 GB memory, Dolby Atmos, fast charging option, and other miscellaneous. Other smartphone manufacturers tend to only add a trivial upgrade and label it as “flagship”.

Moreover, Oppo only creates eight smartphone variants in a year, with Find X as a flagship, Reno for the middle class, and A series for entry-level class. Oppo Find X is sold at Rp14 million. Reno, as a middle-class smartphone, offers the Find X-like technology with cheaper price, at Rp5 million – 13 million.

A and Reno series are both divisions of the F series. For the F Pro series, they go to Reno. For ordinary F series, they go to A series, sold at Rp1.5 – 4 million. A series contributed to 60 – 70 percent of Oppo’s sales in Indonesia, while Reno contributed 20 – 25 percent. Being the most expensive line, Find series only contributed 5 – 20 percent.
