Online drivers and riders may hitchhike during PSBB

The spokesperson of the Transportation Ministry, Adita Irawati, stated that allowing the online ride-hailing riders and drivers during the large-scale social distancing (PSBB) does not violate the related regulations, Transportation Ministerial Regulations no. 18 of 2020.

Starting Friday (10/4), PSBB had been running into effect for two weeks in order to suppress the number of cases of the novel Coronavirus disease (COVID-19). PSBB means restrictions for people to stay outside, unless for essential reasons and those whose sectors are allowed to.

One of which is public transportation. However, the passengers' capacity and operational hours will be cut short

Speaking through a video conference on Sunday, Irawati said there are activities allowed during PSBB that could be done by motorcycles. Besides delivery, motorcycles can be used to pick up and take people whose sectors are still running amid PSBB, or those whose works cannot be done at home.

Previously, the regulation stated that the online ride-hailing service should only cater to the delivery service. However, it also states that the online ride-hailing service can be used to pick up people as long as the vehicles fulfill the health protocols set by the Indonesian government.

Irawati said that the Ministry will scrutiny the regulation should the implementation is not doable. While health is another matter, it is the responsibility of the Transportation to set regulations for transportation.
