Older iOS and Android bid adieu to WhatsApp

Recently, the multi-platform cross messaging service owned by Facebook, WhatsApp, announced that it will stop its service on some older versions of Android and iOS starting on 1 February 2020. Since the date has come, WhatsApp fulfilled its word.

The company, acquired by Facebook, does not support Android Gingerbread 2.3.7 and older anymore. Gingerbread itself is an Android OS launched in December 2010. The most notable smartphones running on Gingerbread OS were some Sony Xperia series and Samsung Galaxy S2.

For Apple, WhatsApp will stop working for iOS 7, launched in 2013. The version ran on the iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C, iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPad 4, iPad 3, iPad 2, iPad Mini, iPod Touch 5.

Regarding the decision to not supporting the older OS, WhatsApp said it was a tough, yet a good decision.

If you happen to own smartphones with either Gingerbread or iOS 7, you might want to consider an upgrade or update your version ASAP. Or else, you will not be able to chat with your friends and family on WhatsApp.

On 31 December 2019, Nokia with its Windows OS cannot run WhatsApp anymore.

Despite not hinting any stop in service for the newer than Gingerbread or iOS 7 version, WhatsApp suggested the users of Android 4.0 and beyond, and iOS 8 and beyond to update their OS version to the latest.
