North Korea says it carried out record-breaking ICBM test

The North's state-run Korean Central Television broadcasted the launch on Thursday. It says the missile was the newly developed Hwasong-18, which uses solid-fuel technology. Pyongyang carried out its first test of the missile back in April. Solid-fuel missiles can be launched faster than conventional missiles, and it's harder to detect signs of their launch beforehand. KCNA says the missile broke records in distance, altitude and flight time. It traveled about 1,000 kilometers, reached an altitude of 6,600 kilometers and was in the air for 75 minutes.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un observed the test. KCNA says the launch was a response to growing cooperation between the US, South Korea and Japan. Officials at Japan's Defense Ministry say the missile could have a range of over 15,000 kilometers under the right circumstances, which means it would cover the entire US mainland.
