No more flood in Jakarta, dams in Bogor will be finished by 2020: Jokowi

On Tuesday, a torrential rain rained over Jakarta, causing floods in certain locations. The most viewed was in Senayan, South Jakarta. Some vehicles, especially motorcycles, were dipped in a 30 – 40cm flood, just in front of Plaza Senayan.

Jakarta Water Resources Agency confirmed the news. But, it also said that the flood lasted no more than 20 minutes.

Regarding such a matter, the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, generally known as Jokowi, said that the actions had been done from the upstream to the downstream to prevent floods. One of these actions is building dams.

Speaking to the press on Wednesday in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, Jokowi said that currently, two dams are being built in Bogor, West Java, named Sukamahi and Ciawi dams. These dams will control the water discharge from the higher region to Jakarta.

Unfortunately, Sukamahi and Ciawi are still in construction; hence, it could not prevent the flood in Jakarta yet.

That is for the upstream. For the downstream, the former Governor of Jakarta said that the government is preparing a program to widen the Ciliwung River and clean up the sewers. Therefore, when the mass water discharge is approaching Jakarta, it won’t flood.

Not to mention, Jokowi also urged floodgate management, including reservoir dredging.
