Nissan prepares ¥33 billion investment in electrification

On Thursday, Nissan Motors Co. revealed that it will invest ¥33 billion in its factory in Tochigi Prefecture for the first production system aiming to produce electric vehicles. The revelation was brought by Nissan Executive Vice President, Hideyuki Sakamoto.

While automated car production has remained the same since the 1900s, Sakamoto pointed out that in the present and future, Nissan cars will have artificial intelligence (AI), connectivity, hybrid, and electric engines. Moreover, the automotive competition lies in design, production, and also technology.

Therefore, the manufacturing method needs to change by using robotics and sensors to rely less on physical assembly workers. These systems and robots will be manned by humans, rest assured.

Nissan’s smart factory had produced many state-of-the-art pieces. One of which is a powertrain mounting system that allows 27 configurations in one procedure. The parts of the system are put into one foundation unit so that it can be installed easily into Nissan vehicles.

These robotics and systems will also replace human craftsmanship. The automated sealing process ensures an exact duplicate of human touches. For Nissan, robotics craftsmanship means that the work will continue to a long length which cannot be done by humans, and robots are more consistent.

Sakamoto estimated that the production change will be completed in 2020. First in Japan, and later in specific locations around the world. Further details are yet to be unveiled by Nissan.

Based in Yokohama, Nissan is currently struggling to rebuild its reputation and crank up its sales once more, while delivering futuristic, eco-friendly vehicles. Its CEO, Carlos Ghosn, was arrested due to financial misconduct. And, his successor, Hiroto Saikawa, was no different.

However, Nissan owes gratitude to Ghosn as he was the one who brought the head-start for Nissan in terms of electrification.
