New York City struggles to find shelter for migrants

New York City officials have asked state and federal governments to support its shelter system, which is overwhelmed by an influx of migrants, many from Latin American countries.

Some Republican-led states, such as Texas and Arizona, have been transporting migrants by bus to New York and other cities in protest of the President Joe Biden administration's immigration policies.

More than 100 migrants are sleeping on sidewalks in New York, waiting to be accommodated. A city official told reporters on Wednesday that there is no more room.

The official said more than 95,000 asylum seekers have entered the city since the spring of last year, with about 14,000 of them arriving in the past month alone.

New York is called a sanctuary city for its rules guaranteeing shelter to anyone who needs it.
