New "Rurouni Kenshin" to be Broadcast in July

A new TV anime "Rurouni Kenshin - Meiji Swordsman Romantic Story" (shortened to "Rurouken") will be broadcast from July in Fuji Television's Noitamina block. The announcement was made at the "Fuji Television Animation Lineup Announcement 2023" held online.


The new TV animation of "Rurouni Kenshin" will reconstruct the original story from the first episode using the latest animation technology, and will be directed by Hideyo Yamamoto ("Strike the Blood"), series composed by Hideyuki Kurata ("Made in Abyss"), and other talented staff. The original author, Nobuhiro Watsuki, himself completely supervised all aspects of the story, including character design and scenario, and the cast has been completely renewed to bring the world the new TV anime "Rurouni Kenshin" 30 years after the start of the series.


This popular work, serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1994 to 1999, has sold more than 72 million copies in total. The story depicts the legendary swordsman Himura Kenshin, who was feared as "Battousai the Manslayer" at the end of the Edo period (1603-1868). After the Meiji Restoration, he and his friends help people with a reverse-blade sword that cannot kill, under the vow of "no killing.


The series was completed in 1999, but a sequel, "Hokkaido Arc," has been serialized in "JUMP SQUARE" since 2005. 1996 saw the first TV anime adaptation, followed by a theater version in 1997, three OVAs since 1999, and a live-action film adaptation starring actor Takeru Sato. It continues to be loved as a milestone work of action period drama.
