New boss for Boeing, David Calhoun

David Calhoun is appointed to be the new CEO at the U.S-based jet manufacturer, Boeing, succeeding in the former CEO, Dennis Muilenburg. Calhoun took over the mantle on Monday.

Calhoun’s name had been buzzing around as the new CEO of Boeing since 23 December 2019. The 62-year-old businessman had served quite a long time as the Director of Boeing.

First things first, as the new CEO of Boeing, Calhoun aims to make 737 Max fly again at what he referred to as a “crucial time for Boeing”. If somehow Calhoun manages to make 737 Max fly again, he will receive a bonus of US$7 mil.

Ever since two deadly crashes (Indonesia’s Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines) involving 737 Max, the jet has been grounded since March 2019. Altogether, the crashes killed almost 350 people. The loss had amounted to US$9 billion.

Boeing is also facing another problem such as the hike of expense due to Max’s production halt in January to more than US$9 bil. Not to mention, Boeing also had to compensate the airlines at loss.

Therefore, seizing greater opportunity, Calhoun wanted to restore confidence in the firm by reconciling Boeing with all the U.S lawmakers, global airlines, and the U.S parliament members. Since the crashes, the U.S lawmakers called Boeing 737 Max as “flying coffins”. Boeing also faces a US$5.4 mil fine from the U.S regulators, for allegedly installing faulty parts on 737 Max.
