Natural 'ice curtain' delights visitors in northern Japan

A naturally-formed curtain of icicles is amusing visitors in a town in the northern Japanese prefecture of Aomori.

Groundwater seeping out of a cliff has frozen over because cold gusts of wind have been blowing into the area from the Sea of Japan. The ice-covered cliff is located near Senjojiki Station in Fukaura-machi.

The "ice curtain" is 100 meters wide and 20 meters high. Visitors have been taking pictures and enjoying the winter spectacle.

A man visiting from Hirosaki City said he had never seen an ice curtain before. He said he was delighted to see the wonderful scenery.

A man who runs a nearby inn said he wants visitors to enjoy the views.

The town says that people will be able to see the ice curtain through mid-February, if the cold weather continues.
