Nadiem: Time to redeem three deadly sins in Indonesia's education

Indonesia’s Minister of Education and Culture and former boss of GoJek, Nadiem Makarim, stated that there are three “deadly”, repetitive sins in Indonesian education that needs immediate solutions. These sins are intolerance, sexual abuse, and bullying.

In early February, a bullying incident happened in Malang, East Java. Due to bullying, a student’s right fingers had to be amputated.

Speaking at Parliamentary Complex on Thursday, Nadiem pointed out that there has to be a reformation in the Indonesian education system to make amend those sins. Even, the Minister said that the sins are unacceptable.

While there are many regulations and rules regulated to tackle such events, Nadiem said that the implementation is ineffective; hence, they did not yield maximum results. Moreover, the former GoJek boss said that he alone cannot abolish these sins, since the Ministry’s power is limited.

The Ministry only provides the regulations to strengthen character, guide, and advise through Regulation of Education and Culture Minister No. 82 of 2015 on. Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) pointed out that the implementation was ineffective.

Therefore, Nadiem pointed out that the synergy between agencies and institutions is integral to solve the problems. However, firm actions at every level are necessary.
