Muslim Quake Survivors in Turkey Begin Observing Ramadan

Muslims around the world, including survivors of the recent devastating earthquakes in Turkey, have begun observing the holy month of Ramadan.

Followers of Islam started fasting from dawn to dusk on Thursday. Some of them are among an estimated 2 million people in Turkey who have been living in tents since the magnitude 7.8 quake on February 6 and subsequent tremors.

The quakes, which also jolted neighboring Syria, left more than 50,000 people dead in Turkey alone.

Some evacuee families dined on distributed meals when fasting was over.

The Turkish government has only recently begun constructing housing for quake survivors.
