Most American Cars are Manufactured by Japan

Toyota and Honda are the manufacturers for nine of the fifteen most U.S.-sourced vehicles. The “American-Made Index” survey made recently by Cars.com determined it based on where they are assembled and the origin of car’s part. The editor of Cars.com, Kelsey Mays, said that the number is not surprising. There are about two-thirds of Honda’s cars are assembled in the U.S. This is more than the number from General Motors and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. As for the Toyota, they also sell mostly American-made vehicles in the U.S. market.

The survey by Cars.com was based on the assembly location, the sourcing of car parts, the factory employment, sales and sourcing of engines, as well as the transmissions. Kelsey Mays didn’t want to give the details about the five factors in the survey. Nevertheless, the result determined that the Japan manufacturers has been a solid player in the American market. This automotive trade issue is also something President Donald Trump concerns about.

The Jeep Cherokee SUV from American’s Fiat Chrysler is on the top of the list and GM’s Chevrolet Corvette sports car on the fifth. However, Japanese automakers dominated the list just like last year. Honda had the most models on the list, which are seven models. They’ve been made at plants in Alabama and Ohio that included the Honda Odyssey Minivan, Ridgeline pickup truck, and two models from Acura. Toyota got two vehicles on the list. Those are the Toyota Avalon manufactured in Georgetown, Kentucky, and the Toyota Tundra built in San Antonio, Texas. Trump had threatened to impose tariffs on Japanese auto imports to the U.S. Toyota’s executives condemn the threat as company’s investments in the U.S. aren’t welcomed and the contributions from its American employees aren’t valued.
