Morocco agrees to normalize ties with Israel

On Thursday, the Kingdom of Morocco agreed to normalize ties with Israel, after having been mediated by the 45th U.S President, Donald Trump. Through the agreement, Morocco became the fourth Arabian country to normalize ties with Israel in 2020. The news was confirmed by Trump's tweet on Thursday.

In the agreement, the White House stated that Trump would acknowledge Morocco's sovereignty over the Western Sahara territory. Speaking to AFP, the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, gladly stated that he had expected the historical moment to come. Furthermore, Netanyahu mentioned that Morocco and Israel would reopen the liaison offices in Tel Aviv and Rabat, previously close two decades ago. Secretly, Morocco has been allowing Israeli tourists in the last few years and would allow direct flights to and from the country.

As the other Arabian countries, Morocco had confirmed its deal with Israel, yet it uses careful narrations. The Kingdom of Morocco stated that King Mohammed VI had held talks with Trump via phone to agree on the normalization of diplomatic relations with Israel with minimal delay. During a briefing in Rabat, a senior official of Morocco's Foreign Affairs Ministry stated that the step was not an "acknowledgement" for Israel, but as a "normalization" to revive the ties of the past.

Morocco followed the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, and Sudan, having normalized ties with Israel firsthand through Abraham Accords. While some saw it as a breakthrough, some saw it as proof that the Arabian nations are losing their commitment to support the struggle of Palestine. On the other hand, the nations also have the same interest as Netanyahu and Trump on fighting against Iran.

The Kingdom also confirmed that the King had talked with the President of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas, and convinced him that Morocco would not neglect its role in defending the lawful human rights of the Palestinians. However, the Islamic group controlling the Gaza Strip, Hamas, condemned Morocco's decision as a political sin that would further Israel's occupation on the land.
