Mizuho Financial to allow employees to take side jobs

TOKYO – Mizuho Financial Group Inc. financial group’s top executive stated that they are planning to allow employees to have side jobs. This new policy is expected to start by the end of March next year.

Tatsufumi Sakai, the Mizuho Financial Group’s president, recently had an interview with Kyodo News. During the interview, he stated that he wants the employee to refine their skills in different ways. By having side jobs, they will be facing different challenges and it will make them specialists in their fields. He is also hoping the employees will take this opportunity to gain experiences in startups, manufacturing companies and other industries in order to create new business ideas for Mizuho.

As of now, employees are prohibited to have second job. However, they have already started allowing an employee to work at a major manufacturing company once a week. It is still a trial basis, but the employee needs to be able to keep Mizuho’s confidentiality.

Due to graying population, Japan is facing a labor force shortage. Therefore, the government is trying to make companies letting their employees to have a second job. Recently, Softbank Corp and Unicharm Corp have started to let their employees to take side jobs. The government is hoping other companies will use this policy in the near future.
