Microsoft gets the license to do business with Huawei

On Thursday, Microsoft Corp announced that they are back in business with the Chinese tech juggernaut, Huawei, after the United States (U.S) government had granted Microsoft the license to export its software to China amid the trade war between the two countries.

A spokesman from Microsoft stated that on 20 November, the U.S Department of Commerce had granted a license for Microsoft.

Since more than six months ago, the U.S administration had been putting Chinese companies, one of which is Huawei, in its “Entity List”, requiring licenses for companies who want to do business with them.

The U.S administration saw Huawei and other Chinese companies as a national threat, accusing them of providing “back door” for the Chinese government to spy on countries.

But, on Wednesday, the President of the U.S, Donald Trump, allowed all the American companies to do business with Huawei, twice this week. About 300 requests were submitted to the Department of Commerce that day and only one-quarter of the total was approved. The rest was rejected.

The granting of licenses by the U.S administration was considered as an action taken by Trump to smoothen the process to the “Phase One” agreement between the U.S and China to settle the rattling trade war once and for all.

Regarding the names of the companies, it is not clear. However, a reliable source stated that there are some licenses for sales of cellphone components and non-cellphone components were approved.

One of the most anticipated companies by Huawei was Google. They would not admit it, but it is hard for Huawei smartphones to sell outside China without Android and Google’s services. When asked for comments on Thursday, Google clammed up.

Some parties, however, were unhappy about the move. A bipartisan group consisting of 15 U.S senators stated that the licenses should not have been given because it would threaten the national security.
