Mexico Sends 15,000 Troops to Guard Border

CANCUN - As part of the deal between the US and Mexico, the Mexican government sent as much as 15,000 troops to guard the northern border between the two countries, in order to prevent any immigrant from meeting Uncle Sam, stated Luis Cresencio Sandoval, Mexican Secretary of Defense, during a press conference held on Monday (24/5) in Cancun.

Meanwhile, 2,000 additional troops had already been deployed to the southern border of Belize and Guatemala, and 4,500 troops are guarding Mexico to intercept any immigrant wanting to cross to the US. Previously, Mexico stated that it will deploy 6,000 guards to guard Guatemala.

On 8 June, the president of the United States, Donald Trump, tweeted that on 7 June a deal has been reached between the US and Mexico. Initially, Washington was planning to slap an additional 5% tariff hike for all imported American goods on Mexico, should Mexico refuse to comply with America’s demand. Mexico also did not come quietly to the threat. They also threatened to slap tariffs to their imported goods to the US, should the threat come true.

Indeed, the US tabulated its southern border was the most vulnerable area for illegal immigrants to breach. In May alone, Trump stated that approximately 132,000 Mexicans had invaded American, adding that the number itself exceeded US immigration figure since 2006.
