Media Literacy, the way Google teaches anti-hoax from an early age

Still remember curriculum for instructors entitled 'Be Awesome Internet' that Google made a few years ago? Now they have added an important component in this curriculum, namely media literacy aka learning to recognize hoax news.

Just a reminder, 'Be Internet Awesome' is a curriculum created by Google that focused on teaching about security in cyberspace to children. For this year, Google adds material to media literacy.

Reported by Engadget, Wednesday (6/26/2019), Google collaborates with Net Safety Collaborative, one of the play-to-learn programs to teach children to detect misleading news or hoaxes. Where one of the activities is educating children about how to recognize news hoaxes, disinformation and others by recognizing fake URLs or misleading headlines.

In addition, there are also activities that teach children about critical thinking skills which are named 'Don't Fall for Fake'. With this activity, it’s expected that they will be able to think critically to differentiate credible and not credible news.

In this Google-style media literacy campaign, 'Share with Care' activities are also taught. This activity is carried out to teach children to maintain their online reputation. There is also the 'It's Cool to be Kind' activity that teaches about cyberbullying.

Google reportedly felt worried after YouTube was often accused of spreading misguided information. To prevent this problem, the giant in the field of technology also began to focus on the topic of information dissemination. With a focus on this topic, they hoped that people will be wiser when using any online platform.
