Maui wildfires kill 36, cause widespread power outages

Local media say about 10,000 homes and businesses are without power, and cellphone services are out in places. President Joe Biden on Thursday declared a major disaster on Maui. He announced that the federal government will provide funds for assistance, which may include temporary housing. Wildfires broke out on multiple islands in Hawaii on Tuesday morning and spread rapidly due to strong winds from a hurricane passing to the south.

Satellite imagery taken on Wednesday indicates extensive damage to the tourist town of Lahaina, the former capital when Hawaii was an independent kingdom. Images show buildings and streets having being razed. The Hawaii Tourism Authority is urging people to refrain from non-essential travel to Maui.
