Macron: Trump and Rouhani know they should talk, but it's up to them

After attending the 74th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, stated on Tuesday (24/9) that the United States (US) and Iran already knew that they should talk, and the conditions had been put forth for them to reconcile.

Before returning to Paris, the French President said that it was up to them to take up the condition and regain momentum between the US and Iran. Macron pointed out that both countries' leaders seek to not only resolve the tension but also to build a long-term accord.

Macron became one of the leaders struggling to alleviate tension in the Gulf region between the US and Iran. After the attack on the Saudi Aramco oil facility, the US, Europe, and Saudi Arabia jointly blamed Iran for the attack.

While the conditions and atmosphere have been set to at least make the President of the US, Donald Trump, and his Iranian counterpart, Hassan Rouhani, meet, both countries have their conditions.

Rouhani stated that he would not meet Trump unless Washington agreed to lift the economic sanctions that have been choking Tehran. Trump, on the other hand, did not want to meet Rouhani unless he came to the negotiation table without any precondition.

These one-sided conditions make it even harder for both to meet even though Trump and Rouhani are still in New York on Wednesday (25/9). Macron asserted that both the US and Iran needed to show their commitments.

Regarding the question of whether both would meet, Macron could not say the precise. He only said that Trump and Rouhani must not miss the chance because once Rouhani returns to Tehran, it would be hard for both countries to reconcile with Trump unwilling to go to Tehran and Rouhani unwilling to go back to Washington.
