Ma'ruf Amin: Intolerance yields terrorism

Speaking at the 66th anniversary of the Nahdhatul Ulama Students Association (IPNU) in Jakarta on Sunday, Vice President of Indonesia, Ma’ruf Amin, stated that intolerance, both in thoughts and actions, yields radicalism and leads to terrorist acts that will divide and disrupt Indonesia’s security. For your information, Nadhlatul Ulama (NU) is the world’s largest Islamic organization based in Indonesia.

Attending the anniversary, the Vice President only relays the message for the IPNU to keep the religious and patriotic spirit alive.

Ma’ruf pointed out that intolerance only gives birth to fanaticism and elevates one group’s ego. One of the signs is takfiri, a fanaticism of a group that labels people, even their fellow Islamic brothers and sisters, as kafir (gentile).

Explaining further, people with takfiri (takfirun) only think of themselves as the right side, while the others are wrong.

As the former Supreme Leader of NU, Ma’ruf stated that the message brought by NU is moderate which means no liberalism and radicalism, but striving or dynamic in keeping up with the time. Established before Indonesia’s proclamation of independence, Ma’ruf said that patriotism and unity should be IPNU’s traits.

The 76-year-old vice president also hoped that IPNU may protect Indonesia from radicalism to preserve unity, welfare, and peace among the Indonesian people. That means no more hate speech in religious speeches.

Besides religious affairs, Ma’ruf also relays the national goal that IPNU should be involved in producing competitive, high-quality human resources, a goal aiming to be achieved by the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo.
