M5.8 Earthquake sweeps Pakistan, at least 24 killed and 450 injured

On Tuesday (24/9), an M5.8 earthquake swept northern Pakistan namely Kashmir and other cities. The earthquake occurred at 4.02 pm local time, striking 23 km north of Jhelum, roughly 120km south-east of Pakistan's capital Islamabad, hitting 10 Km deep, according to the report from United States Geographical Survey (USGS). The tremors could be felt in New Delhi, India.

New Mirpur, a city located nearby Pakistan-controlled Kashmir, was severely damaged due to being near to the epicenter of the earthquake. At the latest, at least 24 people died and about 450 people injured. Among the casualties, there were children.

Photos and videos circulating on the internet showed devastated houses and road cracks big enough to swallow vehicles. Three bridges were destroyed in the affected area.

The Prime Minister of Iran, Imran Khan, currently attending the 74th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), expressed his deepest condolences to the casualties. He then ordered all departments to immediately assist in the affected areas.

It was reported that the medical teams had been dispatched to assist the injured. The evacuation is still in progress with the damage report yet to come.

Pakistan experienced its worst earthquake in 2005 when an M7.6 earthquake hit Kashmir killing more than 80,000 people in its wake and injuring more than 60,000.
