LRT completion to miss deadline by 22 months: Developer

State-owned construction company PT Adhi Karya, the developer of the Greater Jakarta light rapid transit (LRT) network, has said problems in land acquisition had hampered construction work and the project would not be completed until 22 months after the initial deadline.

“We hope to complete the project in April 2021, 22 months later than the target,” Adhi Karya president director Budi Harto was quoted by tempo.co as saying in Jakarta on Thursday.

The sluggish acquisition of 10 hectares of land in East Bekasi, West Java, on which an LRT depot would be constructed, was among the problems faced by the developer. “The construction of the LRT depot will take 20 months,” Budi said.

Budi explained that land acquisition for the depot for 32 trains started several years ago, with a number of payments being made. Sixty percent of the payments have since been made. He said that to meet the April 2021 target, the land acquisition had to be completed by March.

The LRT will eventually service Jakarta, Bogor, Depok and Bekasi. The first phase of the project consists of three routes  -- Bekasi-Cawang, Cawang-Cibubur and Cawang-Dukuh Atas -- with the total length of 44 kilometers.

Each car is designed to transport 130 passengers, with each train comprising six cars, meaning that each LRT trip will be able to transport 780 passengers.

Budi said Adhi Karya was ready to start construction as soon as the land was acquired, which was the government’s responsibility. He stressed that the LRT would be operational once the first phase was fully completed. (bbn)
