Looking for longevity? Just jog! Here is why

Are you too lazy to get up from your bed and run a mile or two? Start doing it now. New research showed that if you jog, even less than once a week, you have the chance to prolong your life on Earth.

The joint study, done by researchers from Australia, Thailand, and Finland, claimed that less than 50-minute jogging, even shorter than the length National Health Service (NHS) had recommended, with a pace of lower than six miles/hour might prevent you from an early grave by 27 percent.

Meanwhile, NHS recommended that an adult should exercise at least for 75 minutes weekly.

The study analyzed 14 studies involving 233,149 participants whose health was being monitored between 5.5 and 35.5 years. During that time, 25,951 participants passed away.

When the studies were tabulated, it was found that 50-minute exercise per week led to a 27% reduction of premature mortality. Also, it led to 30 and 23 percent lower risk of dying from heart disease and cancers respectively.

The researchers even pointed out that even if you jog only once or even less than once a week, it is better than no running at all. Jogging – referred by these researchers as the most affordable and the least time-consuming – has profound health benefits to longevity. It reduces body fat and increases high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, dubbed as “good cholesterol”.

Concluding the study, the researchers said that the amount of exercise for each individual is different, and a prescription from a doctor is recommended. They also stated that further study should be conducted to know the healthy properties of jogging.
