LED Is Not Eye-worthy, Says Researchers

Many companies hail LED as revolutionary to electronic device. Invented decades ago by Russian inventor Oleg Losev and British inventor H. J. Round, LED has been used in nearly all devices, ranging from TV to cellphone, even to light the streets.

LED deems to be the solution for the millennials who cannot keep their eyes from the bright lights of TV and cellphone because LED takes fewer energy, and it is less dangerous to our eyes.

However, you might want to stop at the “less dangerous” point. The advertisement released by the company might not tell you enough truth about the “darkside” of LED. Too much is never too good. Adhering to the principle, too much usage of LED causes serious damage to your eyes, precisely your retinas, according to a research by Agency for Food, Environment and Occupational Health and Safety (ANSES), a health organization in France.

Compare the LED light with the sun. Both of the light sources emit blue light. Blue light from the sun is more intense than LED. However, try to stare at the sun for a moment. It hurts your eyes, right? The same applies to the usage of LED. LED emits less intense blue light from the semiconductor. This intense blue light makes our retinal tissue grow old faster. Imagine you are 30, but you got a 60 year old vision, it is the precise analogy of the danger of too much usage of LED.

Not only the intensity of the blue light that accelerate visual degeneration, but also it disrupts your sleep pattern, as the study showed that people who use LED too much are suffering from sleep deprivation.

Nonetheless, as the present generations rely too much on LED system, it is more likely that in the future early retinal, macular degeneration and visual acuity will be the most common diseases. Many companies also sell “anti-blue light” glasses and screens. However, the effectiveness of this “prevention” measures is quesitonable.

The world is still trying to develop a safer, but still economy friendly lightsource. But, for a while, we still have to stick with LED until then.
