Knowing more about bipolar, a psychological disorder known among famous people

Recently, an influencer and businesswoman in Indonesia, Medina Zein, was arrested in South Jakarta. She was found guilty of consuming amphetamine and methamphetamine. Nonetheless, Medina admitted that the consumed the medicines to treat her bipolar disorder, claiming that she used the medicine according to the doctor’s prescription.

But, what is bipolar disorder? Briefly, it is a psychological disorder related to an extremely fast “change of emotion”. While some people take it lightly, it is actually a serious disorder, often leading to the tendency to commit suicide.

The bipolar sufferers have two kinds of “extremely polar” moment between mania and depression. Hence, the name “bipolar”.

While being in mania, the bipolar sufferers feel happy for a long time, with sleep deprivation, rapid speech, and overconfidence. It is not positive at all since, in this state, the sufferers might make impulsive decisions, be easily annoyed, and experience hallucinations.

While being in depression, the sufferers feel sad and hopelessness for a long period of time. In this period, they often withdraw from social activities and lose interest from whatever they were originally interested in.

In between these states, they are just a regular person. That’s why it is often hard to detect.

However, Indonesian psychiatrists said that drug is not the option. Amphetamine, for example, is a component for Adderall, a medicine to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in the United States (U.S). SO, it is not a treatment for bipolar disorder.

Regarding Medina’s confession, they cannot say much, especially drug and alcohol abuse within psychological patients is not a new thing in Indonesia.

On the other hand, they relate the consumption of alcohol and drug with the fear of psychiatrists due to the social concept where going to the psychiatrist equals “psychologically handicapped”.

Therefore, when one is feeling a disturbance in his/her mental state, it is better to consult directly with the psychiatrist, not to alcohol nor drugs. The faster, the better.
