Kepco reports on its policy of finalizing candidate sites for interim storage facilities by the end of 2023

Kansai Electric Power Co. (KEPCO) has reported to the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy that the company's plan reflects a new policy to finalize a candidate site for an "interim storage facility" for spent nuclear fuel from its nuclear power plant in Fukui Prefecture by the end of 2023.

With regard to the interim storage facility for spent nuclear fuel, Kansai Electric Power Co. (KEPCO) is aiming to set up the facility outside Fukui Prefecture, where its nuclear power plant is located, and has indicated that it will finalize the candidate sites by the end of 2023.

Takashi Morimoto, president of KEPCO, met with Nobu Hosaka, director general of the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, on April 24 and reported that the new policy was reflected in the company's plan for the handling of spent nuclear fuel.

Kansai Electric Power Co. (KEPCO) had previously said that it would present a candidate site for an interim storage facility as soon as possible, with an eye to around 2020, but this will now be postponed for two years.

On the other hand, the Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan (FEPCO) has proposed that the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) and other electric power companies jointly use a facility currently under construction in Mutsu City, Aomori Prefecture, as a candidate site for an interim storage facility.

After the meeting on the 24th, President Morimoto told reporters, "We are interested in participating in the joint use of the facility, although we have to ask whether we can get the understanding of Mutsu City.

However, the city of Mutsu is strongly opposed to this idea, and there is no way to realize it.
