KDDI to partner with Nokia and Ericcson for 5G

On Monday, a Japanese telecommunication operator, KDDI, announced that it would take two telecommunication equipment vendors, Ericsson from Sweden and Nokia from Finland, as its primary vendors for the distribution of 5G networks in Japan.

Working two decades with KDDI as the supplier of multiple ranges of techs, Nokia and KDDI would cooperate to enhance 4G networks and of course, to enable 5G in Japan. Meanwhile, Ericsson, cooperating with KDDI since 2013, landed the deal to provide equipment for the radio access networks. In 2015, KDDI and Ericsson signed a deal on research for the development of the 5G networks.

KDDI holds a high and fast expectation for the 5G network coverage throughout Japan. KDDI targeted the 5G networks to be commercially available by 2020. For the long term goal, KDDI aimed that the 5G network coverage will be more than 93% by 2025.

Nokia and Ericsson are having a good time in 2019. KDDI is not their only customer. SoftBank, as one of the biggest network providers in Japan, also used their service to provide the requirement to cover Japan with the 5G networks.

In December 2018, the Japanese government put restrictions on Chinese companies, Huawei and ZTE, from any procurement deal in Japan over cyber-security concerns.
