KDDI, Facebook Japan collaborate for a 5G-powered shopping experience

On Wednesday, Facebook’s Japanese branch announced an upcoming collaboration with the KDDI as one of the major Japanese mobile phone carriers. Together, Facebook Japan and KDDI are going to treat the Japanese people to an all-new shopping experience with the lightning-fast 5G network.

The collaboration will take form in a pop-up store in Tokyo, set to complete by Spring 2020. The store will offer a virtual prediction with the make-up or clothes using the pictures of themselves. The customers will just have to scan the code using Instagram, a service owned by Facebook.

Not only trying on the products virtually but also after scanning the code, the customers will be provided with the explanation of the product by a multilingual virtual assistant, catering to the needs of foreign customers as well.

Why Spring 2020? It is because the 5G network will be available commercially in the land of the rising sun at that time.

KDDI and Facebook Japan are not the only collaboration to test the 5G market. SoftBank and NTT Docomo are also seeking partnerships with tech companies from the United States (U.S). In the upcoming December, NTT Docomo will offer a one-year membership on Amazon Prime, an on-demand service by Amazon.com Inc. SoftBank, on the other hand, will offer unlimited access to social network sites.

Japanese mobile phone carriers are trying on other services because the new October’s legal revision forbids them from reaping profit from pricey data usage to subsidize device purchases.

With the speed 100x faster than its 4G predecessor, the 5G network is hailed to deliver data transmission without latency resulting in seamless imagery, more vivid images, and sharper motion. Therefore, the 5G network will be widely used in various sectors, from commercial to medical sectors.
