Kawasaki's pro basketball team to get new arena
The city of Kawasaki is slated to get a new sports arena for its professional basketball team. The facility will also feature a hotel, restaurant and park.
Major Japanese IT firm DeNA and train operator Keikyu have announced they will jointly construct the facility on a site adjoining Keikyu-Kawasaki Train Station.
The arena will be home to the Kawasaki Brave Thunders, with seating for up to 10,000 spectators.
Opening is scheduled for October 2028.
DeNA executive chair Namba Tomoko notes that the location is close to Tokyo's Haneda Airport. She said the city can send out "a sense of vigor and hope for the future from Kawasaki, thanks to a wonderful location, with an entertainment complex that includes an arena."
Several new sports arenas are being constructed across Japan. That's because the country's top basketball league has requested clubs to have facilities with a capacity of at least 5,000 by the start of the 2026 season.
