Jordanian tourist found dead in Bali

BALI - The honeymoon went wrong for a Jordanian couple. A Jordanian tourist, Mahmoud Mohammad Milhem (28), was reportedly lost when swimming at Double Six Beach, just in front of La Plancha Beach Bar & Restaurant, Seminyak, Badung, Bali, on Thursday (25/7) at 05.00 p.m. local time.

The report came from the deceased’s wife who informed that her husband has not come back. A joint SAR team was deployed to seek for the 28-year-old man. His wife, who was also swimming with him, told the SAR team that her husband was swimming with a boogie board.

Denpasar SAR team then sent 5 personnel for the operation, together with 1 rescue truck and 1 rubber boat at 05.15 p.m. local time. They searched 15 nm (newton meter) from the location of the drowning. However, at that time, the search yielded no result.

On Friday, the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) sent three rubber boats, two jet skis, and a helicopter to assist the search. Also, they broadened the scale of search to the air search as well.

The body of the deceased was finally found by lifeguards on Friday (26/7) at 03.20 p.m. local time. The body was found approximately 1 km north from the waters of Double Six Beach. The possible cause of the drowning was because the deceased was drifted away by the rapid current. Besides, the deceased was swimming far from the observation of the lifeguards, making it harder for the lifeguards to save.

On Friday afternoon, the lifeguards at Kudeta Beach asked permission from the joint SAR team to continue their surfing lessons at the beach. By coincidence, when one of the lifeguards was rowing his surfing board to the middle of the sea, he found the body of the Jordanian tourist floating about 50 m from the shoreline.

Upon being evacuated, the deceased’s body was brought to Sanglah Hospital for autopsy. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of Jordania, Ayman Safadi, had sent a consul from Jordanian Embassy in Jakarta to travel to Bali to follow up on the incident and its details. The Ministry also prepared to take the body back to Jordania.
