Jokowi to Rutte: The Netherlands should invest more in Indonesia

On Monday, President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, generally known as Jokowi, met the Prime Minister of Netherlands, Mark Rutte, at the Bogor Palace, Bogor, West Java.

Among the topics covered by the two country representatives, investment was also involved in the talks. Jokowi specifically asked the Netherlands to invest more in maritime infrastructure and water management sectors, as he unveiled in a press conference after the meeting.

Not only investment but also fair and just trading between Indonesia and the Netherlands. During the talks, Jokowi mentioned United Nations (U.N) resolution concerning palm oil.

The former governor of Solo also hailed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on 26 September between Indonesia and Netherlands to improve small-scale palm oil farmers. Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno Marsudi, and Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, Sigrid Kaag, signed the MoU in New York during 74th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Despite the bitter past between Indonesia and the Netherlands, the European country is the second-largest partner for Indonesia in trading, investment, and tourism. Last year, the Indonesian Ministry of Trade noted US$5.14 billion tradings between the two countries. Rutte claimed that the figure might increase as the bilateral relations between Indonesia and Netherlands grew tighter.

Not only in maritime infrastructure and water management but also Rutte stated his hope to invest in more sectors such as education, waste management, and healthcare. The Dutch Prime Minister also unveiled the plan of “Indonesia - Netherlands Education Fair” in July 2020.
